NEW YORK, NY (May 17, 2022) – THE CITY, an independent, digital news outlet dedicated to hard-hitting reporting that serves the people of New York, was awarded two honors by the New York Press Club for its reporting on the city’s economic recovery and the New York Police Department’s misconduct procedures.
New York in Job Hunt as City Seeks Economic Comeback from Covid by Greg David, THE CITY’s fiscal reporter, won the Business Reporting NYC Metro award for digital publications. David’s coverage takes an ongoing look at the shaken-up jobs market amid the pandemic — including the varying impact on different employment sectors and evolving signs of what’s to come.
THE CITY also won the Crime Reporting award for their series Misconduct Unbecoming: The NYPD’s Lack of Discipline.
In 2020, renewed scrutiny brought to policing by the murder of George Floyd by a Minneapolis cop extended to the NYPD, leading to the overturning of a New York State law that largely shielded the disciplinary record of uniformed personnel.
In 2021, THE CITY’s reporters Yoav Gonen, Gabriel Sandoval, and Greg B. Smith used disciplinary records and additional reporting to raise serious questions about the NYPD’s ability and willingness to police itself. The stories paint a portrait, at best, of a haphazard police disciplinary system defying heightened reform efforts at a time when the stakes are only growing.
