Send Us a Tip

Is there something you think we need to look into? Do you have documents, recordings, or correspondence you think we should see? Do you know about something happening that’s illegal, unethical, a conflict of interest or anything else that may be harming the public interest or breaking the public trust? We want to hear from you.

Below are the various ways you can share information with us:

Send us a message on Signal

Signal is a free chat app that supports end-to-end encryption. This means that no one other than the sender and the receiver will be able to read the contents of the message, view the video or images, listen to the audio or review the documents. You can also set messages to self-destruct after a certain period of time once that message is viewed. Signal does not retain any meta data; it retains only your phone number and the last time you accessed the app. On our end, we will be able to view the number of the phone that sent the message. If you are concerned about having your phone number revealed to THE CITY, we suggest sending from a separate phone or trying one of the other avenues below.

Send us a message on WhatsApp

WhatsApp is a chat app owned by Facebook. While it also supports end-to-end encryption, the company said it collects some metadata including the numbers involved in the messaging and timestamps. Like Signal, on our end, we will be able to view the number of the phone that sent the message. If you are concerned about having your phone number revealed to THE CITY, we suggest sending from a separate phone or trying one of the other avenues below.

Email us

You can email our general tip line at tips@thecity.nyc. It’s always monitored by editors.

While it’s easy to email us, if the information you want to share — whether it’s a tip or a trove of documents — is sensitive, we encourage you to reach out to us first via one of the encrypted chat apps above (Signal or WhatsApp).

Drop something in the mail

Mail us something. It’s easy and secure. Two things to do to ensure security: 1. When you drop something in the mail, do so without a return address. 2. We suggest you mail it from a public mailbox, not a post office, from your home or a mailroom. Feel free to address it to a specific reporter or THE CITY:

228 East 45th Street, Ground Floor, M#97, New York, NY 10017

Feel free to call or text us, too

You can always call or text our newsroom, too. Someone will be on the other end of the line. But, again, if you’re looking for a secure way of sharing confidential or sensitive information with us, use one of the avenues above.

Call or text us: 347-443-4315

Want to reach out to one of our reporters specifically?

We have reporters that cover the five boroughs and a host of other topics that affect all New Yorkers. Click here to go to our team page. Contact information is available for each reporter.

If you have any questions about any of the above that is not confidential or sensitive, email tips@thecity.nyc
