Governors Island

The SUNY school on Long Island will lead a partnership of academic institutions, nonprofits and community groups to come up with climate solutions.
Local universities CUNY, the New School and Stony Brook are among four academic-led teams that have been selected to get a chance to turn 33 acres of the harbor island into a center to tackle environmental challenges ahead.
Dan Doctoroff, the former development czar responsible for Hudson Yards and other megaprojects, is among 37 individuals and groups who delivered 12 different proposals for ideas to anchor a New York Harbor climate center.
Leaders on the island have floated grand plans for the harbor retreat, including a center for climate change education. Finding a partner to build and operate the resiliency hub, however, remains a hurdle.
